Stacy's Mystery Names

Click 'mystery solved' under each title to see the solution. I put them on separate pages so you all can play along. :)

Peter

Added 22 July 2005

1850 Census, Perry Township.

I am struggling with Peter's last name - hints, anyone?

Peter is a farmer, born in Ohio.

Madison D., Mystery Blacksmith

Added 2 Jun 2005

1850 Census, Perry Township.

Once again, I think I can see what this name is - but I have found no other evidence (later census entries, birth records, etc.)

Madison is listed as a blacksmith in the home of Benjamin Case (also a blacksmith.)

Joseph and his Wife

Mystery solved by Clara Harsh
Added 12 Jul 2002
Updated 6 Aug 2002 with clues from Don Lama
Solved 24 Sep 2004

1850 Census, Washington Township.

I admit that I think I know Joseph's last name. His wife's name is still bugging me, though, and I've not been able to find corroborating information as of yet.

Don found a marriage record for our mystery couple, but they used what I assume is a nickname for our lovely lady (argh!) Here's the relevant information:
Joseph Harsh married Riekey Cook, 19 Jan 1847, Hocking County, Ohio.

Joseph is listed as a farmer, and was born in Ohio. His wife was born in Germany, and the children in Ohio.

Here is the rest of the family (as listed on the census):

  • William (2 M) (I had previously listed William as being '12' - thanks to Don Lama for the correction)
  • Elizabeth (1 F)
Thanks go to M Ishmael, for a good guess. Your guess was the same as mine, but it didn't quite fit the writing.

Thanks also to Clara Harsh, who I believe has given us the correct name for Joseph's wife.

It stood unsolved from 25 Feb till 23 Jun, 2002 - 149 days. Good job!

1850 Census, Washington Township.
Transcribed elsewhere as 'Flanbeard'; I'm not sure I buy that. What do YOU think it says?

Here is the rest of his family (as listed on the census):

  • William (17 M)
  • Julius (16 M)
  • Augusta (15 M)
  • Amos (11 M)
  • Edward (8 M)
  • Henry (6 M)
  • Adam (4 M)
  • Solomon (2 M)
They were all born in Germany, except for Adam and Solomon, who were born in Ohio.
