Traditions and Language

If you know of any other traditions or regional language to include on this page, please mail Stacy. Thank you!

Belling

Also known as: shivaree, serenade, horning

The belling was a wedding tradition where the local townsfolk would gather and make as much noise as possible on a couple's wedding night. Any available item was put into service to make noise: pots and pans, tongs, shotguns, and the like. The traditional way to end the raucous serenade was to "show the bride", or to invite the revellers into the house for refreshments.

Medina County Information -- this site has an account of a belling where a live goose was thrown into the bridal chamber... and I thought being short-sheeted was bad!

Mangoes

In southeast Ohio, some people called bell peppers 'mangoes.' My mom, who grew up in Perry County in the 1930's, still calls bell peppers mangoes. So, if you find that your Hocking County ancestors were growing mangoes, I'd guess this is what they had in mind.

Redding

Redding is a synonym for cleaning. I most often hear it when referring to cleaning the house... "We need to redd up the house for company."
